THE REDISCOVERY OF AN ANCIENT CULTURE AND WORLD VIEW
All the cyclical philosophies and concepts of time employed by man model themselves on the movements of the heavens. There is a celestial model for this cyclical principle in the 28 phases of the moon, a phenomenon that occurs before our eyes as the rest of creation swirls around in time.
The spiral has long been used as a symbol to depict growth and movement; it is one of natures' patterns occurring everywhere on earth and in the cosmos. Symbols have always been used to represent meanings or aspects of life and there is one symbol in particular, the double spiral motif from our Neolithic ancestral heritage that has led me to illustrate and interpret its possible significance. I believe it symbolizes the opposing polarities that create life and dynamic energy.
Symbols can be read like hieroglyphics or cryptic coded messages. One simple icon can stand for a complex description or explanation, once a symbol is understood there is no need for words or intellect - the simple diagram will say it all. This thought has guided me to create many semi-abstract paintings discovering the balance between the polarities and the alignment of spirit and matter, male and female or positive and negative. My work in "Temple Culture" depicts this concept.
This principle is also inherently a spiritual teaching of Alignment, to find the centre where spirit and matter interlock to create a force within us that ‘can move mountains’. This is a form of meditation, a system of health, healing and self-support; a method of coming into harmony with the Universe first for our own growth then to help others grow and finally to bring balance to our transitory existence and strive for peace, love awareness and creativity.
