ARTIST'S STATEMENT
As an artist, my aim and need is to discover and bring light to hidden beauty and naturalness. This is an ongoing process of discovery, restoration and transformation where life experiences forever unfold the secrets of nature and teach the importance of alignment between matter and spirit. Unity of being is the basis of all spiritual traditions and the need for this unity exists in everyone. I believe this dynamic energy transforms individuals, promotes insights and is a force for positive social change.
Invisible compositions of sacred geometry become the 'perfect' foundation to start the journey or the experience that each painting brings. With intuition I try to reflect the notional centre of the human being which we can all reach by learning to quiet the mind and concentrate on stillness. My work reflects my need to connect with the dimensions of pure creativity and abandonment. This endless search and process of abstraction comes step by step along with my quest for universal truths, knowledge and simplicity.
In my mind the paintings have become conceptual, providing a point of departure, a provocation, an invitation to take this inward journey that leads to unity, interpreting not only the visible but also the invisible to inspire the soul or the mind towards transcendence, to calm, console and renew.
"When you work with love it is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart even as your beloved one were to wear that cloth"
Kahlil Gibran (19th century poet, philosopher, artist)

BIOGRAPHY
Anna Grima (b. Malta) is an interdisciplinary artist whose works have been exhibited in Malta and abroad. Her earliest formative influence was her aunt Blanche Ellul Sullivan (1907-2002) artist and artisan.
Anna began her practice as a graphic designer and illustrator. In 1982 she was awarded a scholarship by the Italian Cultural Institute to study painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti, Perugia Italy, focusing on the study of the nude and tutored by the late Professor Bruno Orfei.
She continued to paint whilst learning print-making and mono-printing until the late eighties when she embarked on a painting/sailing expedition in the Indian and Pacific Oceans (1984 to 1988) practicing the ancient Japanese art of Gyotaku at sea around the Indonesian archipelago later to exhibit her works in Western Australia and San Francisco Ca, USA.
Her abstract paintings, watercolours and drawings are a diverse expression of her preferred subject matter and are the outcome of her contact with different cultural and spiritual traditions during her travels in Europe and the Far East.
Recently, her works have formed part of International exhibitions and symposiums related to the study and interest in temple culture and sacred sites where attention focuses on sacred geometry and iconic representations of the sacred. Her colours, symbols and concepts echo her native ancestral heritage and resonate with universal truths and beliefs.
Many of her paintings hang in private and public collections, most recently two of her abstracts were chosen to represent Malta forming part of the prestigious Berlaymont Summa Artis Collection at the Berlaymont building, Brussels.
She currently lives and works in Malta.

CRITIQUE
A sensitive evolved poet, searching to colour in palettes of mystery and magic the bankruptcy of our world today, she is a sky dancer who uses her spirits compass to guide her towards a destination which one may term completion. Hers is an art which goes beyond the visual aspect of her work, haunting as this is in its own right.
Anna Grimas pictures follow a spiral path of coiling and uncoiling which in the process transcends itself into a series of ritualistic meditations. Whatever the subject she opts for, her works may always be read as sacred epiphanies; gateways to the transcendental, manifesting an inner creative power which seems to be injected by the magic of divinity.
Her cosmological and symbolic language (always guided by an extraordinary disciplined drawing hand) may be read in terms of energy, reminding us that the real qualities of life lie in fact in the immeasurable and non-quantifiable. Like an alchemist who turns lead into gold, she manifests the phenomenon of Transfiguration from nescience to awareness. It is as if she is painting with her inner eye, for her works are above all lovescapes of the soul; veritable paeans to the state of enlightenment.
